Having your passport photo rejected is frustrating โ especially when it looks perfectly fine to you. The truth is that most rejections have nothing to do with how the photo looks. They are caused by technical issues that government portals check automatically before a human ever sees your photo.
Here are the most common reasons and exactly how to fix each one.
This is the number one reason for rejection. The US passport portal requires photos under 240 KB. A photo taken on a modern smartphone is typically 3 to 8 MB โ more than 10 times too large. The portal rejects it instantly, automatically, before anyone looks at it.
US passport photos must be exactly 600 ร 600 pixels. A photo that is 598 ร 600 or 610 ร 610 will be rejected. Most photo apps crop to approximate sizes without hitting the exact pixel count required.
Most government portals accept JPEG only. PNG and HEIC files โ which iPhones produce by default โ are commonly rejected even if the dimensions and file size are correct.
A background that is light grey, cream, or slightly off-white will sometimes pass and sometimes fail depending on the portal's automated checks. Pure white (#ffffff) is the safest choice.
Your face must take up between 70% and 80% of the photo frame. If you are standing too far away or too close to the camera, the photo may be rejected by automated face-detection checks.
The pattern: Most of these rejections happen before a human sees your photo. Automated systems check file size, dimensions, and format first. If any of these fail, the application stops there.
The fastest way to fix all three technical issues at once โ file size, dimensions, and format โ is to use a browser-based tool that handles the conversion for you. UploadPass resizes your photo to exactly 600 ร 600 pixels, converts it to JPEG, and compresses it to under 240 KB in one step.
Upload any photo from your phone or computer, select the US Passport preset, and download the fixed file in seconds. No account needed, nothing stored.
Stand facing a window with natural light. Avoid lamps above your head which cast shadows under your eyes and chin. Even, diffused light gives the cleanest result.
Stand against a plain white wall. If your wall is off-white, move as close to it as possible to reduce shadows. A bedsheet or large piece of white card works well too.
Look directly at the camera, mouth closed, neutral expression. No glasses. Hair pulled back from the face is recommended so the face detection software can clearly identify your features.
Resize, compress, and convert any photo to meet exact passport requirements. Free and private.
